Outdoor Plants in Pots: What Survives, and What Kills Them
A pot outdoors is a harsher place than the ground — hotter, drier, and colder in winter. How to pick plants and pots that cope, and get through the cold.

A container outdoors is a harsher place to be a plant than the ground beside it. The root ball heats from every side in summer, freezes from every side in winter, dries out within hours, and holds whatever nutrients the last watering did not flush out of the bottom.
Plants that thrive in pots are the ones that tolerate those swings. Nearly every container failure is either the wrong plant, a pot too small, or winter.
Pot size is the decision that decides the rest
The volume of compost is a buffer. A large pot warms slowly, cools slowly, and holds enough water to get through a hot day. A small one does none of that, and every mistake you make is amplified.

Material matters more outdoors than in. Terracotta looks right and breathes, which also means it dries fastest and can crack if frozen wet. Glazed ceramic holds moisture better and looks substantial. Dark plastic is light and cheap and cooks roots in full sun; light-coloured plastic is a straight improvement. Fabric bags air-prune roots and drain freely at the cost of drying quickly. Metal heats hard and needs a liner in a sunny spot.
The gravel-in-the-base myth
Putting gravel at the bottom of a pot does not improve drainage. Water does not move easily from a fine material into a coarse one, so it perches in the compost above the gravel — meaning you have raised the waterlogged zone closer to the roots and removed compost volume in the bargain. Use potting mix all the way down, and make sure the holes are real and clear.
Choosing plants that cope
The reliable performers share a trait: they tolerate their roots drying out and being confined.
Sun, low fuss: pelargoniums, lavender, rosemary, salvia, sedum, thyme, olive, agapanthus, ornamental grasses.
Shade: hosta, heuchera, ferns in a big enough pot, fuchsia, begonia, hydrangea if you can water reliably.
Permanent structure: boxwood, dwarf conifers, Japanese maple, bay. These make the container scheme look intentional in February as well as June.
Edibles: salad, herbs, chillies, dwarf beans, strawberries, and cucumbers in a large enough pot.
The classic arrangement — a tall “thriller”, a mounding “filler”, and a trailing “spiller” — works because it fills the pot at three heights. It is a useful default rather than a rule.
Match the water needs, not just the look
The most common mixed-container mistake is combining plants with opposite needs — a lavender that wants to dry out with a fuchsia that must never dry out. One of them will always be unhappy. Group by thirst first, then by looks.
Watering and feeding
Check daily in summer, twice daily in heat for small pots. Push a finger in to the second knuckle rather than judging by the surface, which dries long before the root zone.
Water until it runs freely from the bottom. A light splash wets only the top inch and trains roots upward, where they are most vulnerable.
Because that thorough watering flushes nutrients out, containers need feeding in a way beds do not. Mix slow-release fertiliser into the compost at planting, then liquid feed every two weeks through the growing season. Worm castings are a good gentle addition to a container mix.
A two-inch mulch on the surface — bark, gravel, or compost — cuts evaporation noticeably and stops the surface capping.
Getting through winter
This is where most permanent container plantings are lost, and it is not usually the air temperature that does it.
In the ground, soil insulates roots. In a pot, the root ball is exposed on every side and can drop to near air temperature. That is why the standard advice is to choose plants rated roughly two hardiness zones colder than your own for anything staying out all year.
What actually helps:
- Group pots together against a sheltered wall, largest on the outside.
- Raise them on feet. Waterlogged compost that then freezes is what splits pots and rots roots. Drainage matters more in winter than in summer.
- Wrap the pot, not the plant. Bubble wrap or hessian around the container insulates the roots; fleece over the top protects tender growth.
- Move what you can into an unheated garage or shed — dormant plants do not need light.
- Stop feeding in late summer so growth hardens off before the first frost.
Terracotta and unglazed ceramic are the pots most likely to crack, because water absorbed into the walls expands as it freezes. Empty and store the vulnerable ones.
