Companion Plants for Cucumbers, and What to Keep Away
Cucumbers need pollinators and hate competition for water. What genuinely helps, what the evidence is thin on, and the two neighbours worth actually avoiding.

Cucumber yield depends on something most companion planting advice skips: bee visits. Each fruit needs multiple visits to a female flower, and poorly pollinated flowers drop or produce pinched, misshapen cucumbers.
So the most valuable companion for a cucumber is not a pest repellent. It is something in flower nearby.
What to plant, and what it actually does

The marigold claim, corrected
French marigolds do have solid evidence behind them — against root-knot nematodes, which they suppress through compounds released by the roots, and the effect needs the marigolds grown as a cover crop and dug in, not dotted between plants. What they do not do well is repel flying pests like cucumber beetles, which is the claim usually made. They still earn a place, because they attract hoverflies whose larvae eat aphids — just for a different reason than the one on the packet.
What to keep away
Potatoes. The one genuine conflict. Potatoes are heavy feeders with dense shallow roots that compete directly for the water cucumbers need, and both crops suffer in the damp, crowded conditions that result. Keep them in separate beds. Potato needs are covered in growing potatoes.
Melons, squash and pumpkins. Not harmful, but they are all cucurbits and share cucumber beetle, squash vine borer, powdery mildew and bacterial wilt. Planting them together concentrates every problem in one place. Spread them out if you can.
Sage, rosemary and lavender. Often listed as harmful. They are not — they simply want the opposite conditions. Fennel. Genuinely allelopathic — it inhibits the growth of many neighbours. Give it its own corner.
Aromatic herbs do not flavour the fruit
A persistent piece of folklore says planting strong herbs near cucumbers makes the fruit taste of them. It does not — plants do not transfer flavour compounds through soil or air to a neighbour’s fruit. Bitterness in cucumbers comes from cucurbitacins produced under stress, usually from inconsistent watering, and blaming the herbs sends people looking in the wrong place for the fix.
The Three Sisters, with cucumbers
The traditional Indigenous American planting of corn, beans and squash works because each part does a job: corn provides the support, beans fix nitrogen and stabilise the corn, and squash shades the ground and suppresses weeds.
Cucumbers substitute for the squash reasonably well, and vining varieties will climb corn stalks.
Two things make it work rather than fail:
- Plant the corn first and let it reach knee height before the cucumbers go in, or the corn gets swamped.
- Use a sturdy corn variety. Sweet corn bred for tenderness often cannot carry a mature cucumber vine in wind.
The honest summary on companion planting
Some of it is well documented: legumes fixing nitrogen, trap crops pulling pests off a main crop, physical shading, French marigolds against nematodes, and flowering plants bringing in pollinators and predatory insects.
Most specific “plant X repels pest Y” pairings come from tradition and have not survived controlled trials.
The mechanism that does reliably work is diversity itself. A mixed bed supports more predatory insects and more pollinators than a monoculture, and for cucumbers specifically, more pollinators means more fruit. That is reason enough to plant flowers among the vegetables, whether or not any individual folk pairing holds up.
